Kitchen of the Week: A Compact, Nautical Entertaining Kitchen on Cape Cod

Last summer Julie and Justine stopped into a Cape Cod beach house reimagined by college roommates Tei Carpenter (an architect) and Victoria Birch (an interior designer), inspired by the Belafonte, Steve Zissou’s boat in The Life Aquatic. The kitchen is filled with design ideas to steal; let’s zoom in closer.

Above: The light fixtures are all vintage; a double sconce from Amsterdam and a red barn light from 1st Dibs (for something similar, look to Barn Light Electric). The countertops are oak finished with a marine varnish. On the white electric range sits a Kaiko One-Handle Pan by Japanese designer Makoto Koizumi. Above: The bronze window hardware is from J. M. Reineck & Son Bronze Yacht Blocks and iron figuring sourced on eBay. It was conceived by veteran sailor and boat builder Chase Hogoboom.

Above: Stainless Steel Yacht Cleats ($14.99 to $69.99 at West Marine) anchor the window riggings. For more ideas, see our post Nautical Hardware: 7 Cleats for Home Use. The walls are Benjamin Moore China White in eggshell. Above: A deck-mounted utility Chicago faucet was stripped down to reveal the brass construction and paired with a ceramic farmhouse sink. (A similar sink is Shaw’s 30-Inch Original 3018 Fireclay Apron-Front Sink from Rohl. For more, see our post 10 Easy Pieces: White Kitchen Farmhouse Sinks.) Above: The Breville Quick Touch Microwave ($249.95 at Williams Sonoma) is concealed in the kitchen island with a retractable door. For more countertop microwaves to stow away, see our post 10 Easy Pieces: Countertop Microwaves. The floors throughout the house are painted in a California Paint high-gloss finish. Above: Sourced from a local hardware store, a white pegboard kitted with hooks holds kitchen utility goods. Key features are a row of Blue Splatter Enamel Mugs ($7.99 each at Rove & Swig) and a paper towel holder made from spliced marine rope (the contractor made the knot). Above: A Kitchenaid 24-Inch Panel Ready Undercounter Refrigerator serves as a mini drinks refrigerator. For more beach houses, see our posts:
